Default OCN Linux Distribution

The original post that started it all:
Quote:
I thought I saw a post about there being an Overclock.net Linux distribution before, but it died.

Perhaps it's just me, but there isn't really a linux distribution aimed for monitoring temperatures, speeds, hardware, whatever. If anyone has the skill, it'd be really awesome to create some sort of live-cd distribution with a bunch of these tools.
Discuss?
Overview
There are a few people who are exploring different possibilities for this distribution. I have been working on a 32bit version on and off, and Biatchi has been working on a 64 bit version.

Project Update Summaries (For Feb 14th, 2008)
Biatchi has been working on an Arch-based distribution, and I have been playing around with a Ubuntu-based distribution (includes an Installer). Both open up the ability of 32bit and 64bit builds.

OCNix 64bit Release
Biatchi has released OCNix64. Check it out! It is the most recent OCNix release.

Download
You can find downloads here:
http://public.box.net/ocn

How to use
Please see Biatchi's post for release notes and how to's.

OCNix Release 8.2.7-v
This is my own 32bit release based on Morphix and Debian linux. It currently functions as a livecd with no installer.

Download
You will find the latest files here: http://public.box.net/ocn

How to use
You should set a password for both ocnix and especially root if you need access to root while logged in:
Code:
passwd
passwd ocnix
You may want to change your user to the ocnix user with: (you can always logout and login with the root user).
Code:
su ocnix
To start the gui type:
Code:
startx
To use the FAH installer:
Code:
perl /usr/share/scripts/FAH-installer.pl
cd /usr/share/scripts/folding/
./FAH504-Linux.exe
Software
The following is a list of some of the software that comes with OCNix:
xfce 4.4.2
FAH Installer (Provided by dangerousHobo)
PerlMon 0.1.2 (Slightly modified for OCNix)
pidgin 2.3.1
nvclock 0.8b3
lm-sensors
iceweasel (Firefox) 2.0.0.11
hdparm 7.7
hddtemp 0.3-beta15
hardinfo 0.4.2.3
cpuburn 1.4
conky 1.4.9
bonnie++ 1.03c
filelight 1.0
gkrellm 2.3.1
gparted 0.3.3
xsensors 0.50
xarchiver 0.4.6
rovclock 0.6e
radeontool 1.5
boinc-client/manager 5.10.30

Bugs
Note: Various programs only work properly when run as root. You may want to try using "sudo" if logged in as the ocnix user.
- zlib bug with one of the hardinfo benchmarks. zlibg1 is installed, not zlib, if that makes a difference?
- Morphix livecd scripts: they need to be cleaned up, and the cd does not autoeject when shutting down. Does someone have the skill to improve these Morphix scripts?
Post any other functionality bugs or suggestions in this thread.

Todo
+ Can xscreensaver be removed? It doesn't work anyway.
+ Decrease distribution size.

I think this would be really awesome, just a barebones distro to get the very most out of hardware. Who all on the forums has the linux experience to do something like this? I will contribute whatever I can, but Im not a very experienced linux user

For just a base system, I prefer Arch Linux over anything else.

If OCN decides to make a distro, I would like to see it based on Arch Linux but maybe skimming down the core packages even more (removing base packages people may not use like mailx, lilo, etc.) and I guess making the setup process more user-friendly since most OCN members defend Windows because "it's easier to use". Then add some things like lm-sensors, Folding@Home, Wine, etc. (maybe in the extra packages) and a desktop environment with an OCN default theme...

Just messing around

Ditto

This was discussed briefly in a thread the other night. It would be sweet and i have contemplated it before but i think it's above my head.

There is Faunos
http://www.faunos.com/ which is a fully featured Arch live cd that we could hack up, It's a nice distro actually.

I would contribute whatever help i could to this. Where the hell are Hobo and Jester these days anyway? We could do with their help for this.
