Now that its morning and my brains rested.

sudo apt-get update
<then enter passwd>


no need to enter it before and have the password siting out on the system in plain text.

Also what shell and terminal are you using. Your's always seems different then mine(bash, aterm).
For shell: echo $SHELL
terminal: which ever one you started up..

Just do 'visudo' and edit the sudoers file (USE VISUDO FOR THIS) to give that script permission to run as root without a password, just make sure it is read-only, otherwise someone could edit the script and then run whatever they want as root instead.
