I think the addition of alpha/beta is unnecessary. I know for the Linux kernel, however, that they add "-rc1" to the end of the version string to denote a release candidate.
Thats fine. I'm just one of those people that always adds the zero to the month if its a single digit.

Everyone putting the pipe symbol into the release name is just asking for trouble.

So the basic idea everyone wants is a dated release? Seems O.K.

I think we should take a leaf out of Slax's book (or old book, it appears they no longer do it) and have separate names for each version of a release. Another way to look at it is Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu style thing.

So, Undervolt could be our leightweight lead. Stock could be are standard, and Unlocked Multiplier could be our version containing Compiz and the like.

I'd vote for:
Name Release Month.Year(-rcX)
OCNix Undervolt 02.2008-rc2

I like lattyware's idea, but we should base the names off of something similar. Like your reference to the Ubunto distros as an example. All of the Ubuntu distros have the phrase "ubuntu" in them. So what if we named them something like Undervolt, Stockvolt, and Overvolt so that it's more obvious as to what they are (and it sounds way more cool).

"rc" generally means "release candidate" which infers that a system of release organization is in place (ie alpha -> beta -> release candidate -> final). I vote for the just "r" (r = "release").

That's my opinion, anyway.

Yeah, I put it in brackets because it would only apply when we had release candidates. I presumed we were doing that kind of system.
