Default OCNix FAQ & Wiki Resource

So, welcome to the first of many informative threads for people who are lost. This is a collection of user-contributed FAQ's and wiki resources; please contribute. If one is missing, I will write it if I get time. We'll start with the basics, and work into unpacking tarballs and how to make/install your own packages. The wiki's will address and apply to both 32-bit and 64-bit OCNix unless otherwise specified, or if I screw up.

~ Please contribute information, links, and/or suggestions or questions ~

I am skipping how-to install, until we see where we get with installation options.

Arch-based OCNix

The first thing you need to know: how to use terminal (not hard). In most wiki's, the "code" is in the gray offset box. Simply copy/paste or type the code in, one line at a time, paying attention to directions, into the terminal. Just like CMD for windows, but used more.

The first thing you may wish to do is set up 3D drivers for your video card.

If you have NVIDIA, click here; If you have problems, see the nVidia website; there are official drivers and instructions there, which you can narrow down by specific card.

If you have ATI, click here; If you have issues, you may also wish to see the wiki over here.

Now, if you want some bling, like that seen here, you will need an "eye-candy" program. Once you have 3D drivers running, see this wiki for CompizFusion (which is what I recommend). If you prefer something with a fewer bugs (there isn't many, just a few), you could also try just Compiz... here is that wiki. Finally, you could always use Beryl, which is decent but is outdated. For Beryl, see this wiki.

You are working with Xfce, which is a "desktop environment". It is fast and lightweight, but you may wish to install Gnome as well, because it makes everything just run nice and smooth for CompizFusion(imo). The Gnome Display manager is great, especially for new/inexperienced users. See this wiki for howto get it set-up. Then, see this website for all sorts of cool themes, icons, pointers, etc for whatever you go with. On Xfce, you would look under the GTKxx category for themes.

If you would like to setup RAID while using OCNix, see this wiki.

SimpleConf v1.2

Every user of OCNix should check out SimpleConf if you have not installed and are running LiveCD or off of a thumb drive. Version 1.2 is now out... this has two example scripts (helloworld and networksetup) and a slightly improved scripting system. Should be backwards compatible to most extents and purposes.

You should submit an article to Wikipedia about OCNix, spread the word to the people.

Once everything is stable and the wiki is done, corrected, etc., then yeah.... I have a lot of digging around to do in the main sticky.... 50 pages of info, and I don't want to miss anything. Probably do a massive overhaul of this wiki on Mon or Tues, once we see what's up with x64 and the installer...

Pls PM me any *official* builds or add-ons; include the following info if applicable:
version #, Lead coder(s) (for credit), type (Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, etc), offical "release" date, 32/64 bit, working direct-download links, relevant notes or important information, installer status/method, and any information that you think is "handy" to note (ie Compiz install shortcut instructions, etc.).....
Same for new DL links and types (.iso, torrent) if you reformat a build

I will add the information to the wiki (which needs an overhaul when I get time....) and to the downloads thread... TIA, REP+ for your efforts to help me keep everything organized and as current as possible. Please point out right away any "misinformation" or if anything is missing

I would make note to learn about any command before you type it in. Remember, although the Linux community is generally nice, and malicious stuff is hardly ever a problem, but it's still worth being cautious. If anyone tells you to do anything as root (sudo / su) then make sure you know what it is first.
I'd also mention that manual pages are a life saver. man <command> will tell you all about it.

As to anything to add, You could add info about SimpleConf. It'd be a shame for no one to realize it was there XD.

Just as a note, that's the V1.1 picture - the newer version looks a little nicer. Not all to important, but you know.

I also just updated it so there are actually some scripts to give an idea of what can be done.
