I used to get that with Arch when I installed it, it turned out it was getting the hard drives wrong, and looking for hard drive 25 or something rediculous, I had to run mkinitfs from the rescue mode and then it worked. I don't know why you'd get that on a live CD.

I had it happen once but it worked perfectly every other time. I think I might see if I can add a short delay in case it is because stuff is not unpacking from the sqush files quite quick enough.

I'm house sitting and only have access to a AMD xp 2200 so changes will have to wait till I get home.

This OS doesn't have any kind of package manager, correct? Everything will have to be compiled?

It's an Arch live cd so it has pacman and uses binary packages and is cli. I have installed Yaourt which is a wrapper for Pacman that also searches Aur for lots more packages.

For a gui frontend for Pacman do in a terminal

Code:
yaourt gtkpacman
and choose 1 then click y when needed.
