The Ubuntu community already has .deb for 175 177 and 180 for nvidia and I forget what they have for ati. If we're still going Debian based they should work.

----------------------------------------------------

How many architecture types are we going to accommodate?
These are the options:
# CONFIG_M386
# CONFIG_M486
# CONFIG_M586
# CONFIG_M586TSC
# CONFIG_M586MMX
# CONFIG_M686
# CONFIG_MPENTIUMII
# CONFIG_MPENTIUMIII
# CONFIG_MPENTIUMM
# CONFIG_MPENTIUM4
# CONFIG_MK6
# CONFIG_MK7
# CONFIG_MK8
# CONFIG_MCRUSOE
# CONFIG_MEFFICEON
# CONFIG_MWINCHIPC6
# CONFIG_MWINCHIP3D
# CONFIG_MGEODEGX1
# CONFIG_MGEODE_LX
# CONFIG_MCYRIXIII
# CONFIG_MVIAC3_2
# CONFIG_MVIAC7
# CONFIG_MPSC
CONFIG_MCORE2
# CONFIG_GENERIC_CPU
# CONFIG_X86_GENERIC

I was thinking one for: (all will have SMP installed, kernel will disable if not usable)
# CONFIG_M686
# CONFIG_MPENTIUMM ( maybe for laptop benchies)
# CONFIG_MPENTIUM4
# CONFIG_MK7 (think these are amd chips?)
# CONFIG_MK8 (think these are amd chips?)
CONFIG_MCORE2
# CONFIG_GENERIC_CPU ( for chips not supported by others)
# CONFIG_X86_GENERIC ( for chips not supported by others)
Maybe use use a generic one for the Live CD and on install have a script (or the user, they should know what CPU they have) choose it.

yeah. that could work, only problem is that each kernel comes to about 25MB with both headers & images. which means that on a live image, we'd lose roughly 150MB of the cd just for kernels that may possibly be used... seems like a little bit of a waste to me

FTP cd? Arch has the option for that. If the NIC doesn't work then we could just install the generic one and they can deal with it.

IDEA!

archlinux.fr server has lots of these restricted stuff in it. It includes opera, virtualbox-bin and some drivers. There are already packages for drivers, which, similar to the flashplayer plugin, are dummy packages which download the actual software and install it.

Anybody volunteering to check if it has what we need ?
We can also ask them to include more packages if they are willing.

As for FTP server, an unlimited bandwidth, 1GB storage space costs around 10$ per year. Anybody willing to volunteer ?

I could maybe donate about 1TB of bandwidth a month from a server in a datacenter in Houston.

if interested whoever is coordinating this could pm me anytime to have this setup.

Thanks for the offer, but I think the project first needs to be completed as an OS before it starts worrying about servers and bandwidth.

We need a few months to finalise the CD first.

I have to design a website for a final project in my Human Computer Interaction class and someone on IRC suggested OCNix, so we now have an OCNix website in the works. When it's done, I'll wrap it up and post it up.
