Haha, he mistook me for the project leader. That would be Biatchi (x86_64) and version2 (x86). Strangely, they choose to different bases (Biatchi chose ArchLinux for his and version2 used Debian...)

Anyway, for benchmarking under linux, you really ought to have a look at the Phoronix Test Suite. It wouldn't take longer than installing ubuntu through live CD and then running a script to install phoronix test suite to set up an INSTALLED benchmark linux.

I am waiting for Debian Lenny to become stable before proceeding because we need something solid for the project and because I am busy with something else.

But if anybody else has time then go ahead and try remastering KNOPPIX 6.0 live CD by adding phoronix test suite along with GParted and Conky. Would be intresting, considering the fact that such a job takes less than a day to complete but needs patience.

I am thinking of finalising on Debian Lenny + Debian Backports + Debian Multimedia + Debian Volatile as the best set of repos for this project. With LXDE as Desktop Environment. What do you guys say ?


PS: have a look at debian live remaster. any n00b who can use a GUI can use it.

The problem with basing it on ubuntu would be that the boot times have been getting slower over the past few releases Phoronix Ubuntu Benchmark. And also Ubuntu changes too often (new release every 6 months), that means we'd be rebuilding every 6 months too, unless we branched off (which I guess is what we're trying to do)

Also, we won't be able to have just a 64bit version because that rules out the people stuck with 32bit processors, but at the same time most people would want 64bit to take full advantage of their 64bit processors.

Anyway, those are just my views. Use them, don't use them.

List of apps to use would depend on the base utilized. For example, no point in including Rhythmbox if we using XFCE as the GUI.

EDIT: We'd have to add scripts to download and install the relative drivers for graphics cards as I've found even the restricted drivers aren't up to par with the drivers from the manufacturers sites
