If you'd still like to keep the option of basing off slackware I have a good deal of experience on it and could offer assistance.
Even basing off debian will be great though IMO. I'd like to contribute to this project so whatever you need just give a shout

Base it off arch, since you have to build it all up custom anyway.

I would agree with that but every time I've played with arch I've gotten so PO'd that I went back to something else. Most problems were related to pacman though.

Fair enough, I've only used it in a VM but never had any major problems with it

They seemed to come and go. A lot of it was checksums not matching current packages and it would think that they were corrupt.

I hear you there, pacman has gotten a whole lot better recently though, but Arch makes you want to kill yourself for about a week. After that though, you get this weird satisfying feeling.

You want fast? Go with a distro where everything's built from source like Gentoo for example. I favor slackware for speed because it's fast to set up and from there I build everything from source. It has a package manager but not the type you are all used to. I only use it for things such as KDE add-ons.
I found slackware to be much faster than arch. I had them both on the same machine and slackware blazed past arch.

Yes... Those .k programs are incredible.
Actually, on lower end systems (like my AMD Sempron lappy) there is a HUGE difference, but I know what you mean.
