But on a more serious note, I couldn't live without Compiz... I'm too addicted to shiny things and fancy paintjobs

oooo, shiny!!!
I must say, I prefer functionality/performance over eye candy, I think that contributes to me hating Vista... its all eye candy. On a clean install of linux (distro irrelevant) I'll first disable compiz, then apply menu speed tweaks, compile new kernel, then look at installing the apps I need

We should just include a single theme by default, centered around the OCN coulour scheme by default imo. If people want more, they can download them themselves, that way we save space etc, and most people will probably be happy with the default anyways

What he said ^^^^^
If someone really wanted to have compiz-fusion, they could install OCNix to their hdd and then install the software themselves. We are looking to only provide what OCNix is designed for which is benchmarking, stability testing, and monitoring.

I think we should definitely go with an lfs base. We don't need a massive amount of packages from a mainstream distro because the purpose of the os is benchmarking. But I'm sure we will want a package manager...I have experience with rpm5.
Oh and irc would be great. Edit: i can start on a base system if i get these questions answered: 1) x64 or x86? 2) gui or cli? 3) rpm5 package manager, or other? 4) I have not created a distro for redistribution before; is there anything i need to keep in mind to make it easier on us later?

I'm in the process of setting up LFS just to play with it. Once I get it up and running I'll let you guys know how it is. I've played with Gentoo and it's great so I wouldn't mind working with it. Though as fast as it is, everything is built from source so setup is a lengthy process. Which is fine if we are building a live CD but if we wanted the user to be able to install and customize further, then I would rather use something with a binary package system for more user-friendliness.
I vote against 64-bit for the following reasons. 1.) Stability testing, benchmarking, and monitoring will have no advantage in a 64bit environment (unless you are comparing benchmarks from 32 to 64). 2.) The only 64bit Linux distro that I've used that's been 100% stable was Fedora 9 x64. I've played with countless others and had numerous issues. 3.) Unless we are basing off a distro that has a solid 64 bit release, things are going to get ugly trying to build a 64bit version. Anyway, I'm going to get to work on the IRC server. I'll host it on my own domain for now. I'll post when/if I get it running.

In that case I vote 32bit Arch, because:
a) its not 64 bit and you said 32 bti would be better b) its probably the fastest distro that doesn't compile everything for source c) it uses binary packages d) pacman is very fast and lightweight e) it comes with no excess baggage to get rid of, its just a base system with not even a gui to start off with, so its perfect for build our custom one
