Post My views about OCNix

The idea of OCNix sounds quite appealing to me. But I think we need some base concepts to be cleared, so that OCNix gets the best possible code base to work upon.

1. No NONSENSE

OCNix should NOT, I repeat, should NOT have unwanted eyecandy like dark themes (light themes suit all but dark themes don't suit all), compiz fusion (which is a resource waste), etc

2. Base OS

I nominate Slackware or Debian Stable as the base OS because we need a strong and powerful platform, which seldom crashes, for OCNix. It needs to tolerate aggressive benchmarking software.

2. Desktop Environment

I suggest Xfce4.4 be used instead of KDE4 or gnome, because its much more stable and light, while retaining the ease of use. I am against LXDE because its still unstable.

3. Phoronix Test Suite

I suggest you include the latest version of phoronix test suite in its entity.
http://www.phoronix-test-suite.com/

4. PerlMon

This is an obvious program which should be included.

5. Swiss Knife Utilities

Please include software like Brasero Burner, GParted, CloneZilla, XChat IRC, etc. A disc like this would be more valuble if it can save rigs from disasters.

Hey good advice. I think production has been put on hold though.

No problem. ANYBODY can continue it, right ?
We just need something working, so even a live remaster tool would do.

I nominate slackware now because it has linux live scripts optimised for it. Somebody needs to install it, customize it, change kernel by replacing existing kernel with one from net supporting SquashFS, remove bloat and then run linux-live-scripts.

Why not try to prepare a list of apps to add ? I guess we may need to make it a 1DVD distro.

The toughest part is to choose the right apps. Hopefully, we can release an RC by the time Xfce 4.6 is out

You're more then welcome to continue it. If I had even the slightest clue as of what I was doing I would make an attempt.

KNOPPIX 6.0 Live CD is out according to distrowatch. I already have experience in making a debian derivative. And I am too lazy to learn slackware since I already have experience with using debian. I think KNOPPIX 6.0 would make a good place to start because its ALREADY a full fledged swiss knife disc, and finally, they had the sense to get rid of KDE and Compiz Fusion. It also means that Knoppix can comfortably run on my system.

What do you think ?

I think the original plan was to eventually install it on to hard drives. So I don't think having only a Live CD is acceptable.

Installing on harddrive has no point IMO.

Why not just install ubuntu and run sudo apt-get install abc xyz pqrs blah blah-blah etc ? That would create OCnix. The objective of OCnix is to provide OverClockers and Benchmarkers a live environment to carry out tests right ?

Why not just get a Linux kernel and build it from scratch to create OCNix? It's just more convenient this way. Also, how long does it take for one to find there highest stable overclock? 4 maybe 5 hours? Imagine loading it from the CD each and every time as opposed to installing it once and having an incredible boot time.

i've done this before using the linux from scratch project. It would be perfect for benchmarking...you end up with an extremely lightweight system, and it boots initially in like 9 seconds lol. I'm willing to help with building a base system, but I don't have experience making installers and live-cds.

Wow that would be great. Also if you provided like a how-to while you make on that would be freaking awesome.
