I agree that Knoppix is a great place to start.

I spent the better part of last night reading on building a custom Knoppix LiveCD and it seems pretty straight forward. If we are going to do this we need to start going through and remove references to Knoppix. Who's the volunteer

change every reference from knoppix to ocnix?

can't you just run a command something like
Code:
 grep -ri knoppix /* | xargs --replace {}
NOTE: I'm just passing suggestions, I'm by no means a linux guru... I'm still learning

EDIT: Just came across this (tip #2) on tuxradar.com.

Quote:
If you have text you want to replace in multiple locations, there are several ways to do this. To replace the text Windows with Linux in all files in current directory called test[something] you can run this:

Code:
perl -i -pe 's/Windows/Linux/;' test*
To replace the text Windows with Linux in all text files in current directory and down you can run this:

Code:
find . -name '*.txt' -print | xargs perl -pi -e's/Windows/Linux/ig' *.txt
Or if you prefer this will also work, but only on regular files:

Code:
find -type f -name '*.txt' -print0 | xargs --null perl -pi -e 's/Windows/Linux/'
Saves a lot of time and has a high guru rating!

Great info thanks!

Don't forget there are graphics with the knoppix logo and binary files containing it. But that should get rid of it in a lot of places.

You shouldn't need to build a repository (that is a huge project). All you need to do is use the repos of Ubuntu/Debian or whatever distro you choose to use. This is what Linux Mint does.

But it really comes down to what do you want the distro to do? Is it going to be a specialized live CD (like Knoppix or backtrack) or is it going to be a full fledged distro like Ubuntu or Fedora?

Good point. That was my drunken thinking late at night

I believe we are aiming for a live CD that could be installed.

I think we looking for a live cd (which can be installed) that provides most benchmarking applications out the box... maybe with scripts that download and install the latest fglrx and nvidia drivers... something to provide a generic OS base for benchmarking
