I'm not educated in sales tax, but how does it not have sales tax, (unless you live in a no sales tax state)?

If I'm not mistaken Amazon only charges tax in Washington.

if I remember correctly if you bought an retail item at an e-store and it happen that the shipping area and business is in your state then you have to pay for taxes because that business is in your same state. If that somehow made sense

I.E. I just added this Open Box DFI 790FX Motherboard to my cart, I punch in my zip code and its calculating the shipping/tax which was 7$ for me cause I live in CA, but when I put in my Texas Zip code no tax was charged.

Edit: for m3th0d's post that right there tells you Amazon's business is located in Washington since it'll only tax people that purchase and live in Washington.

All of the above tax information in this thread is incorrect. Sales tax was to be collected for every sale regardless if it was another state unless that state has an exemption (for example, Oregon has no sales tax). However, the problem is that nearly all businesses were only collecting sales tax in those states that they had a physical location. This is/was not legal, but was not enforced. Now for the bad news....... The government has offered immunity to every business for any internet sales where sales tax was not collected IF they agree to begin charging sales tax as of July 1, 2008. There are 21 states that have jumped on board with this program, including Washington state. Due to the severe penalties with overdue taxes, you can expect businesses to sign up for the tax immunity. I'll miss not having sales tax with Newegg

That blows.

I think the end user was supposed to file it though on their taxes, like if you buy out of state/country stuff. Could easily be wrong on that though.

They should've been charging and collecting it all along. Here's some reading if you'd like to read a little more.
