It's not a *horrible* price for a card that performs similarly to a 9800GTX+/HD4850.... but if you're building a new rig, I'd personally go for an Intel chipset (P45 or X48) and the HD4850 for future Xfire capability over this card. If you have an SLI mobo and aren't willing to switch, the Ultra could be an option though. Great deal for someone who already has an 8800Ultra and looking to go SLI, too.

its good for those guys already with an SLI mobo and 8800GTX/Ultra.
a p45 motherboard w/ 2 HD 4850's becomes the better choice when building from scratch.

if you wanna bask and buy this card that first retailed @ 999 and think of a better time... go ahead. You might as well pick up a x800XT for 40 bucks at ebay, they were around 800 i think during their time of day.

Hold the phone here chief: Let's get the facts straight.

According to the Guru3d VGA Charts, which are far from law but provide our only real comparison benchmark including 8 games at 4 different resolutions for over 20 video cards.

Luckily this exists, so facts can be clearly stated.

Over the 8 games, at 1600x1200 res (what I play at personally)

Radeon 4850 Average FPS: 56.875
8800 ultra Average FPS: 65.25

Radeon HD4850 - $182.99
$3.22/FPS

8800 Ultra - $199.99
$3.06/FPS

The radeon 4850 performs substantially worse in every game except for WIC, where it gets 1 more fps than the 8800 Ultra. Not only is this an $800 card, not produced to be a budget gamer card like the HD4850, it is a better value.

As far as temperature goes:

The HD4850 peaks at 86 degrees - Source

The 8800 ultra peaks at 86 degrees - Source

So it's impossible to say that it has better temperatures, sorry.

*hides from fact haters*

Now thats some good info! Your right the 4850 is made to be a Budget Gamer card and the 8800Ultra is made to be an Extreme Gamer Card!
