I've had it for awhile, but I installed it one day and I just got too frustrated trying to get all my hardware to function properly. Had to source a few .dll's, some drivers weren't working, etc. All in all a very dissapointing experience. It felt to me like a half finished OS. Hell, I had an easier time getting my old ATI vid card runnning Beryl in Ubuntu. It's pretty sad when a Linux distro like Ubuntu is easier and more compatible than Microsofts flagship.
Anyway, it's been a few weeks since that attempt. I've been back on XP Pro since then, but I was wondering if MS has made any recent advancements with Vista compatibility. Do you think it's time to make the switch now, or should I wait a little more? I'd really like to go Vista, but if it's that much of a headache at the moment, I'll have to pass even though I want DX10, which is the ONLY reason I even considered it in the first place. Aero was also VERY dissappointing after playing around with Ubuntu's Beryl. Comeon MS, billions of dollars in development versus the free Ubuntu, you should CREAM that OS at EVERYTHING! Let me just say I feel very ripped off spending 100's of dollars on this new OS and I haven't even been able to use it.

Oh, please don't say XP was this bad in the beginning, as I've been running it from the beginning and never had issues trying to just have a functioning computer.

Well.... check to see if you can find proper drivers for your devices for windows vista before you install it. If they are all there, then just install it. If you feel your stuff still doesn't have vista 64 or 32 driver support (which i'm pretty sure it all does) then don't.
I installed vista ultimate about a month ago and have had no problems with drivers. windows update found almost every single one of mine and I had to do a lot less work (finding drivers) than when I installed XP 32 last year. PS. I don't see why you even made this thread. It seems like you've already convinced yourself it is a terrible OS and this thread was just a means of you taking out your anger on "getting ripped off".

I installed all the newest drivers, but I think some of them were just plain garbage as I'd get random BSOD and other random errors and application crashes. I'll try again I guess. And I install OS's about once every week or so, so I am no noob in that area. I am really just hating Vista right now. I'll give it another go I guess, but if I am without games for a few days again I'll be right back to XP for now. Man, I really hope MS OS's die off within' the next 5 years or so in favor of something open source, or at least something better than this. Like I said, Vista = DX10 to me, nothing more.

The complaints in this thread would ring true if this was January 2007. However, development has moved on quite a bit since then and I no longer get any compatibility problems.

Man, I am sure I would like it OK after everything was running well, but it should never be this much of a hassle to install an OS IMO. And I just feel ripped off. And there is lots people could say that would change my mind. Like some one else feeling the way I do that shares their expereince on how Vistas got better for them after using it for awhile, or something along those lines. If I had only paid $80 or so I wouldn't be so dissapointed.

And I had to trash a $1000 scanner cause it had Win98/W2K support, but did not have XP support. ![]() Unless you have some older hardware or peripherals that use 16 bit drivers, or have crappy driver support anyways, you might want to stick with XP or wait for Vista x32 SP1. Vista Ultimate x64 runs like a charm, and appears to be just as stable as XP Pro, or even slightly better in some respects.
