Default Display driver has stopped responding

When I'm play a game, my screen blacks out for a few seconds and goes back to normal (sometimes I have to reboot to fix it.) I'm using Vista 32 and I went and found this update (938194) which supposedly fixes this but apparently I already have it installed.. This happens even with my card at stock and I know my RAM is stable as is my CPU. I've tried different driver.. 169.04, 163.75 etc. and cleaned with drivercleanerpro when installing them.. I've googled around and a lot of people have had this problem but I didn't really find a concrete solution, anyone know whats going on..?

Fix: Boot safe mode with admin rights.
Go to windows/system32/drivers and rename nvlddmkm.sys to
nvlddmkm.sys.old. Go to the nvidia directory and find the file nvlddmkm.sy_
and copy it to windows/system32. Using the cmd window (DOS box) type
EXPAND.EXE nvlddmkm.sy_ nvlddmkm.sys. When the expansion is complete, copy
the new nvlddmkm.sys to windows/system32/drivers and restart the computer

If this fix does not work then try booting with only one stick of ram. Post your results here.

bump. I got the same problem with COD4 multiplayer. any other fixes?
when I do what zalman says above in the cmd prompt it first says that the file cannot be opened, then is says that there is no destination folder. I searched and found over 10 nvlddmkm.sys files but when I go to delete them it says I do not have permission

You have to go to properties and give permission to your user.. I found this guide that told you to find all of those files and replace them with a new one from your current drivers folder (don't have the link anymore) but I've already tried that and it didn't do anything except waste about half a hour .

i've had the same problem for a while with my GTS, it is factory overclocked to 575/1800. When i set it back to 500/1600 problem was solved but i was like, hey you lame ass son of a botch card i have warrentiez0r!!11.
Well before i was going to phone foxconn i tried using non-beta drivers and problem was solved and i could even run at oc of 621/1458/990.

Then i wanted to ply timeshift and needed new drivers and problem is solved with .09 drivers here.

yes you have to give permission glad you figured that one out. Also yes udating drivers instaliing in safe mode. If using rivatuner you should default, uninstal and then reinstal rivatuner, to allow database to build with that driver set. After reinstal of new drivers and RT, overclock, test and post results back here. Hope this helps

Its a driver issue... Nothing you can do about it but wait.

Most people don't experience it anymore... Try 169.12.
