i heard that the vista dvd has all the editions like ultimate, home, etc. and has both x86 and x64 on 1 dvd. is this true?

It has all the versions, but x86 and x64 are separate disks. You can "Test Drive" any version by not entering a product key when prompted during installation and un-selecting the auto-activation, there will be a prompt and you select "no." after this a screen will come up allowing you to select wich version you want to install.
