Smile EEE 1000H, Ubuntu Vs XP?

I'm going to be getting an EEE 1000H laptop soon. It is a 10 inch notebook with 1gb of ram, 1.6ghz Intel Atom processor, and an 80gb hard drive. I will be using this to take notes, listen to music (headphones) and other school stuff.

What is my best bet?

Nlited XP SP3 (i know how to tweak XP quite well)

Ubuntu 8.04 (Never used Linux before)

I have a spare copy of MS Office 2007 if I get XP, but Ubuntu comes with free openoffice.

Just wondering what the biggest advantages/disadvantages of each operating system are. Gaming isn't really an issue considering it will be for school work and I have a nice desktop.

Well the XP version costs more, so if money is a concern go with the Linux version. And since you don't plan on playing any games Ubuntu would be fine.

I would suggest testing Ubuntu on your current rig, if you have never used Linux before. Some people like it, and others hate it. It will take some getting use to, but there are plenty of great guides on the internet for anything in Ubuntu.

I personally vote for Ubuntu, it can do everything that XP can do (school wise).

you can use wine for Office 2007, so I say go with Ubuntu and save the cash for something else, like a case.

My father just got his EEE PC. Same one as yours I think. He played around with it, tried both XP and Linux. He likes Linux better. XP ran fine, but Ubuntu was much more responsive.
