Default what is ready boost

What is readyboost, and does more space mean potentially more speed?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReadyBoost
Quote:
Using ReadyBoost-capable flash memory (NAND memory devices) for caching allows Windows Vista to service random disk reads with performance that is typically 80-100 times faster than random reads from traditional hard drives. This caching is applied to all disk content, not just the page file or system DLLs. Flash devices are typically slower than the hard drive for sequential I/O, so to maximize performance, ReadyBoost includes logic to recognize large, sequential read requests and then allows these requests to be serviced by the hard drive.[2

RAM will always be better. it's cheap too, so might as well get RAM instead of a flash drive.

more or less. at 8GB, ready boost will do nothing. do you actually utilize all the RAM?

ready boost is most useful for computers with low amounts of RAM. also, worth noting is that ready boost supports flash drives up to 4gb max.

readyboost is designed for machines with under 1gb of ram, using it with more than 1gb will not increase performance

ReadyBoost just caches programs you use most often. So lets say you have Anti Virus, the ReadyBoost will cache the files so they are more readily accessible vs accessing it straight from the HDD. SP1 fixed a lot of the bugs with ReadyBoost, but it was designed for those running on 1Gb or less of ram.

I used readyboost on my system that had 8gb of ram. The patriot razzo 2gb flash drive has a read/write access LED (which showed lots of activity to this day...and readyboost is the only thing I use it for). Even with raptors in RAID 0 and 8gb, readyboost sped up my load times substantially. I don't see why someone would have vista and NOT run readyboost. I think it is one of the OS's best features.

Every time I start up an app, I can see the flash drive going to town :P

I just tried with my setup and a 4Gb drive. But my bios is being annoying and keeps setting it as the 1st boot device, while at the same time kicking off my RAID from any of the selectable boot priority options. I even tried moving the HDDs around to different SATA headers... I was using it on a USB header internally (USB back bracket kept inside the case).

Wow, that sounds like a PITA. I've never had any such probs..
