I use my upgrade edition to do a clean install following this guide http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=5932. I spent the $10 to get the 64-bit sent from Microsoft.

I also learned that I could use my upgrade edition to perform a clean install method above on a HP and Gateway laptop using their Vista OEM key. The laptops didn't include a recovery disc and I decided to give it a try and it worked. One think is it will not activate online. You have to call into the automatic system which will validate it. No need to trick the support line for it to work. It has worked 2 times and is much better than have to put all that extra bloatware. I was told by everyone I asked that it couldn't be done but I tried it anyways. The laptops were 32-bit and I used to 32-bit upgrade disc so I can't say if you can upgrade to 64-bit with this method.

According to the manufacturer of my computer, I cannot upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit without purchasing a "full price license" for Windows. Reference: http://support.velocitymicro.com/ics...questionID=302

I'm still going to try to upgrade through Microsoft method, and I'll let ya'll know the results.

Update: Order placed with no hassle. I'm going to contact my manufacturer and see if they know about this option.

::gasp::

Combine this with the fact that I paid $40 for my Vista Ultimate upgrade disc (that will install Ultimate without anything else on the drive, mind you) through my school, I can pay another $40 and have TWO legit copies of Ultimate?

COMPLETELY AWESOME.

I am jealous of your reptrain that just came rolling in.

You get one passenger courtesy of me.

You could also borrow a 64-bit disc from a friend, most Vista install disks are the same except for 32-bit or 64-bit.

That's $50 AUD, right?

You have a 1GB video card so you've got even less than 3GB available to you. But the option is always here if you want legitimate 64-bit media.

So I borrow it of a friend and install it and use the same serial key?

The Vista media is the same for all editions (Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate). There's one disk with all of those editions for 32-bit, and one disk for 64-bit. It determines which one to install by which key you enter. So if you can find a legitimate 64-bit disk somewhere, then you can do that. But not everybody has friends.
