All right, next desperate question - I have a friend who got Home Premium 64-bit with his Gateway system. Will I be able to use his Windows disc to install 64-bit on my machine?

I'm also going to call Velocity Micro tomorrow for a friendly whisky tango foxtrot. Maybe they can help me out; I'll keep ya'll posted.

This may or may not work. Royalty OEMs such as Dell or Gateway get to make customized Windows DVDs, which means among other things they can refuse to install on your hardware, or install all the Gateway drivers and give you a non-working system. Or you could just wind up with a system that has a bunch of useless junk on it that you have to clean up.

My experience with Gateway has been that they don't ship anything you would recognize as a Windows Vista disc; instead, they have their own "recovery" program which installs a pre-made Windows image containing only drivers for the particular Gateway hardware in use. I think they use Ghost instead of the Windows imaging tools. This configuration is usually unbootable on non-Gateway systems.

So I would say, don't bother.

All right, I spoke with Velocity Micro tech support this morning. At first, the person that I spoke with simply quoted their customer support website. When I explained that Microsoft's website reads differently, and that I had already e-mailed them, the person put me on hold for less than a minute before coming back and saying that I was right. There is a 64-bit DVD in the mail to me as we speak. Hopefully I'm all set, but I'll post once more with final disposition.

Thanks again to the Original Poster for finding this and keeping up with the thread. It's been quite the information mine, and because of you, I'll hopefully be able to put all 4gb of my memory to use. Cheers!

Hopefully this hasn't been asked, but can I do this once I install Windows, or do I have to do it before?

You can do it after, but you have to reinstall the OS in its entirety. You will lose everything on your computer in the process.

that's fine. was just wondering if once you validate the O/S you can't upgrade. I've got a version MS gave me for free, hopefully I can upgrade it.

*edit* When I try to do the update, it gives me an error. Says: "No Product SKU's were found for the information you provided. Please verify your information and try again." Does this work only for OEMs? I got mine from MS at a developer's conference.

That's the wrong link. Go back to the OP and click the one that says "for other countries check the list here".

Specifically, for the UK, you should wind up here.

I have an HP, do you guys think the second link will work for me? First one wouldn't work.
If it will, what do you put in this field?
