Default Which OS?

I'm building a new compu. (see my sig for the rig)

Given the CD verification bull**** with MS, owuld I be better off getting Linux or Unix or somehting like that? Whats the big difference between those 2 and Windows? Could someone like, give a compare/contrast (might even go into a FAQ, if there isn't one already that I couldn't find )

Thanks, and I'm sure since we ALLLLL don't like Windows, people will respond quickly wiht like, 50 million reasons no to get it, lol

+rep for the ones who help

I like XP. It does what I need even if there are security flaws. I think the biggest plus with Linux is that it is open source and it allows for more customization. It's security is much tighter than windows as well.

Its only CD verification bull if you have pirated the software. Its fine if you own a legit product. All companies have to make money somewhere you know...

Get windows, youll be happier in the long run. Then do a dual boot with xandros.

True, if you have a legit copy why worry about it. I'm learning programming for school so I'm getting a copy of Fedora and I'm going to experiment with it. If you're not looking into doing all that or have no interest in it, I'd say stick with Windows. There is a large product support community for it.

FreeBSD. I am trying to think of the Windows like magical one... but for the love of me I cannot .. WAIT

PCBSD. It's like WINDOWS magic. though you still have to do a bit of command line like double clicking an .exe file it will pop up a box and ask you what you want to use and you will have to say "wine". Man that is SOOOOOO hard.

If you are into the newest games (bf2, hl2, etc.) then windows is your (sadly) only option right now. Why? They use DirectX, courtesy of Microsoft, who doesn't have the courtesy to make their DX open source.

OSS is really great stuff, man. Nowhere else can you just pop open a terminal and do all kinds of crap. Windows really places limits on what you can do to your system.

Just install Xp on half your hard drive, BSD or linux on the other half, in that order. Dual boot them, see what you like, use it.
