Hey everyone, thanks for viewing. A few days ago, my father gave me his HP Pavilion ze5600 that he doesn't use, so now I own my own personal PC.
I was wondering if I should consider installing Linux onto the harddrive instead of Windows. Is there going to be a problem with applications, ect? Also, is there a way that I can have Windows AND Linux installed on my hard drive and be able to switch inbetween the two? Thanks again for reading.

if you don't need to use windows or more especially game then why not? Linux has quite a few applications and many of them are very very compatible with and even better than windows ones. openoffice, firefox, and Pidgin are perhaps some of the better known open source programs that come with a default ubuntu install, but there are a lot of other ones.
it'd be best if you list what kinds of applications you are most likely to use. if you do install Linux, install Ubuntu. you can even install it as a program within windows using the option presented when you insert the disk. also, it isn't windows, so don't expect it to work in the same way...

Yeah I would suggest Ubuntu also. I guess to know wether you would have problems with applications we would have to know what programs you use. But chances are there is a linux version that can replace it.
You can install it within Windows like iceblade said or you can install windows first, then when you install Ubuntu you can partition a certain amount of space for Ubuntu and the rest will be for Windows. IMO if you go Linux you go full bars, no Windows/Linux dual boot BS. :swearing:

Why would you need to switch between Windows/Linux when you can use WINE for windows apps?

yes there a way to have linux and windows on a computer. its call dual booting. you first parition the drive then you install windows on one of them and linux on the other. then you use a boot manager such as grub or lilo and your set
