I think this is a valid issue: if program installation is this complicated, Linux is not ready for the desktop.

I know these are all valid opinions, every one. Yes it takes more intelligence to play with linux. It has some screwy driver issue. It has the potential to knock Windows in the dirt if it could be a little easier to set up and more user friendly. I remember writing those long codes in the terminal and then hoping that the code that I just put in that I didn't understand worked.
Don't get me wrong.. I loved Ubuntu and wanted so much to make the switch but now Im back to windows. Why. Personally I think that Linux is still 5 years away from becoming a viable alternative to windows. But. That is an opinion. and you know the rule on opinions. They are all like butt holes. We all have one and they all stink.

I like Linux. In fact, I would use it completely if it weren't for the superior commercial support for Windows.

I would say, Linux is a bit of a "hit n' miss". Sometimes, everything just works, sometimes it drives you nuts.
Though, I think GRUB is waaay too unstable, always stops working for me.

this article is subtly condescending and exaggerating, also claiming to be as infallible as (the concept of) god himself

Quote:
5.2 No games. Full stop. Cedega and Wine offer very incomplete support.
Counterargument: rofl

Quote:
1. No reliable sound system, no reliable unified software audio mixing, many (old or/and proprietary) applications still open audio output exclusively causing major user problems and headache.

1.1 Insanely difficult to set up volume levels, audio recording ... and in some situations even audio output.

1.2 Highly confusing, not self-explanatory mixer settings.

1.3 By default many distros do not set volume levels properly (no audio output/no sound recording).
GJ saying the same thing three times to overemphasize, exaggerate, and drive into the minds of readers

Quote:
8.1 Most distros don't allow you to easily set up a server with e.g. such a configuration: Samba, SMTP/POP3, Apache HTTP Auth and FTP where all users are virtual. LDAP is a major PITA. Authentication against MySQL/any other DB is also a PITA.
now Linux is a bad choice for servers!

this is not worth arguing with, and you've fooled even savvy people. congrats

Totally not the same thing. Your Linux broke? Boot into a Live CD and look up the problem and the solution, boot back in and fix it.

Anyway,

That's funny, since I've had my ASUS Xonar working out of the box in newer distros.

Also, I have an old ATI TV Wonder Pro that I cannot get working in Windows at all (the ATI software sucks ass) the only way I can use it is TVTime in Linux. (That, or Dscaler in Windows, but it's the same concept, Open Source excelled where ATI failed miserably.)

While I applaud the idea behind it, this list is wrong in places. Sometimes it's critisizing good things simply due to misunderstanding.

"14.2 No standard way of software distribution."
Why is this a problem? Each package manager does a good job, and it's not like other OSes have anything better. It defies the point of having many distros if you are to try and tie them all to one system.

A lot of them are similar ("3.2 No unified installer across all distros. Consider RPM, deb, portage, tar.gz, sources, etc. It adds a cost for software development." is essentially the same thing.) and are stupid.

The person writing this obviously doesn't understand the point behind Linux distros, nor does he want a Linux distro. He apparently wants another windows. Many of these points are flat out wrong, outdated, or not problems at all.

Oh, and VLC 1.0 supports blu-ray playback, and, of course, has a Linux release.

I use Ubuntu 9.04 and 8.10 b4, i can say it is very hard for someone not technical like us to set up. I needed to pull up terminal and painstaking surfed through the software manager to set up everything i needed. I figured out all of them but it took me close to 2 hours. I mean how hard is it to integrate MP3/AVI codecs into the OS??

Very if you don't want a lawsuit.

And it seriously took you terminal commands and ages using the package manager?

search -> codecs -> install.

I used to really want to use Linux exclusivly. But I found it to be too much of a pain to do things on. Sometime weeks of research are required to get certain hardware configs to work properly, etc. Just not my thing. Once it is as easy as Windows (ie. not using a command prompt style interface for most things), maybe I'll change my opinion. As it sits, I know I could never suggest running Ubuntu to a family member unless I was prepared to help them constantly to use it.
