It seems like a very nice article, I especially like that the author makes a point to create debate, and not a flame war. I dunno though, I would consider myself fairly savvy PC user, and Ubuntu 9.04 runs flawlessly for me. Although, I will admit that my dad has had innumerable problems with Ubuntu, but since it is free and not from microsoft (two of its biggest pluses, also my dad hates microsoft) he has never had any problem with fixing them all.
Yeah, Linux has lots of problems, many of which this article picks up on, but so too does OSX and Windows, and I definitely think that Ubuntu at least is a very viable competitor to Windows.

The author hasn't tried some of the new releases of ubuntu obviously.
I think Ubuntu is a very good desktop OS as long as you don't do much gaming, but even then there is wine.

I think the problem is that most PC users fall into one of two categories...
__________________1) Keep it simple and stupid, browse the web, email - Windows is what everybody else uses, setup is simple (ie. it comes set up with the PC already) and EVERYTHING is point and click. 2) Gamers, who need to use Windows for obvious reasons. I've used wine, and while it's not bad, I drop a lot of FPS and some games work poorly or not at all. Not worth the hassle at all to me. Of course this is a gross generalization, and leaves out programmers/hackers/benchers/folders/3d modelers etc, but the majority of PC users are either Youtube/Email/Flash/webpage users, or gamers. Linux will get market penetration if and when A) it's sold commonly on prebuilt systems at a cost savings (which MS is doing EVERYTHING it can to prevent) or B) games are released for both Linux and Windows platforms.

Its not that Linux isn't ready for the public.
Its that the public isn't ready for Linux. The pubic is too stupid.

Many of those points are like "*** are you on?". The guy is either using stable branches (in Linux speak that means obsolete) or hasn't used a modern distro in a while. Still, he comes across as more sensible than Linux Hater.

I have to admit, after trying to get my family's PC on Fedora, even I became very frustrated with Linux. I then tried Kubuntu. I also experienced many difficulties, although it seems to be working alright now.
No, it's definitely not ready to satisfy the average consumer, but if you've got patience (talking to average joe here), it'll do the job for you.

I've used Ubuntu 9.04 and Ubuntu 7.xx a few years back, the only problems i've had was getting drivers for my Xfi sound card. Its a fine OS for listening to music, browsing the web, talking on aim or emailing. This is my opinion with OSX as well, this is the biggest reason I stay a Windows users. I need to play my games at the best performance I can have. Sure theres wine, but you'll drop a few frames, the game will take forever to work, or may not work at all. Just isn't worth the effort, especially when in the end you'll be getting less performance anyways.
