evening gents, im new here.. love it so far so i figured i should ask you intelligent people a question thats been bugging me for a while. my specs are listed below ( i think i did it right anyway :3)
__________________okay heres the issue, in Windows XP when i play counter strike 1.6 (online fps, im sure you all know but just to make sure...) every ..5-20 seconds or so it almost seems like id be about to lag out of the game, then id come back, and everything speeds up ( running, shooting, noises) when the lag goes away to compensate for the time ive spent frozen mid step which occurs when my internet is actually lagging for a legitimate reason. then stops, i get a few seconds of smooth game play, then it does it again, lasts for about 1-2 seconds ( when playing competitive counter strike in leagues hurts alot.) oddly enough it does NOT do it in windows vista, which im currently running because all i do is play counter strike. so naturally ive come to the conclusion that my network adapter and/or mobo drivers or hardware arent getting along well with XP. does anyone have any experience with said issue and knows a fix, or just can verify that yea, im s.o.l when it comes to the drivers/network adapter on XP thanks! -adam

Welcome to OCN Shornys.
What service pack to you have installed on XP? Is it XP Home, Pro or MCE? Do you have all of the latest game updates for CS or CSS? Do you have all of your drivers updated for you mobo, vga, sound, nic etc etc? Do you monitored your temperatures for your system i.e. cpu, chipset, video cards etc? What is the ping rate on the servers you are playing on? Does the problem exist on every server? Is your power supply any good? Have you tested it under load w/a DMM or looked at your voltages under load via windows software? Have you run any benchmarking applications like 3DMark06 and cross compared your results agianst similar systems as yours? have you run any Stability tests to make sure your system is stable? Have you run a virus Scan? Have you ran M$ Maliscious software remover tool? Are you trying to run the game at a resolution that is to high a setting for your GPU? I don't know if any of these questions will help you any but they may be very usefull for some one w/more experience then me when it comes to diagnosing your problem/s. Good Luck, N2G

Is it XP Home, Pro or MCE? PRO
__________________Do you have all of the latest game updates for CS or CSS? YES Do you have all of your drivers updated for you mobo, vga, sound, nic etc etc? YES direct from their respective websites Do you monitored your temperatures for your system i.e. cpu, chipset, video cards etc? yes all low. What is the ping rate on the servers you are playing on? 25-30 (new york exclusively) Does the problem exist on every server? online servers yes, doesnt do it if i create my own LAN game though, im guessing due to it not being online. Is your power supply any good? Have you tested it under load w/a DMM or looked at your voltages under load via windows software? havnt done that.. but im pretty sure its good. Have you run any benchmarking applications like 3DMark06 and cross compared your results agianst similar systems as yours? not yet no, planning on it have you run any Stability tests to make sure your system is stable? no. Have you run a virus Scan? yes & about 5 fresh formats Have you ran M$ Maliscious software remover tool? yes. Are you trying to run the game at a resolution that is to high a setting for your GPU? i play at 640x480 lol EDIT. im no expert, but im 99% sure the problem is NOT being caused by GPU, i mean, i know its not a top line card/cpu, but i can drop 20 smoke nades on my feet, spray and still maintain 100fps solid

Edit: I just rememberd that I forgot to ask about your RAM. Your sig shows you have 3GB. Is that 3x1gig sticks or 2x512GB & 2x1GB. I'm thinking if its 3x1G then you may be running your ram in a single channel and if its two sets of mixed densities then I would try to run memtest86+ to make sure your not getting any memory errors.
OK so I gather your trying to run CS or CSS on XP PRO but what Service Pack? Your Game is updated w/the most recent patches and a virus is not the problem, assuming since you have run the M$ maliscious tool you have a legitimate copy of the os not a free copy form some downloaded web sight. All your hardware temps are within normal operating perameters and all your drivers are up to date. The resolution is not the problem, so one would think. Have you tried to run it at any higher resolutions. If so what were the results? Do you have the most up to date patch or updates for Punkbuster? or does this game even use punkbuster? I can't remember. I'm assuming your steam account is a fresh download and updated to the most recent updates since you have already done 5 formats... what kind of services do you have running in the background? It could be someting hogging your resorces while your game is running. What kind of hard drive is it IDE or SATA and is it near full?
