The search box in the fire explorer doesn't seem to work for me. For example, in my Music folder I type in "Nickelback" and I get "No Items Match Your Search" despite me being able to see the folder titled "Nickelback"!
Example attached!

Hmmm... it seems that the search bar is trying to save you from crappy music. You should be thanking it instead I think.

Even though he is right, have you tried clicking Advanced Search, then ticking "Include non-indexed, hidden, etc, files"?

Well that but that isn't how the search box is suppose to work. It is suppose to be like the start menu search box. Results appear instantly.

What? Make sure your indexing is up to date, or possibly disable indexing if you don't want it and see if that fixes the problem.

Quote:
The search function on windows Vista (Search 4.0 if you updated) is based on a service that continuously look at the files on the disk and creates an index used by the windows interface to show the results. The service has two features: 1) since the search job is heavy, the service works only when the computer is idle. 2) the service uses an intelligent algorithm to discard from the search all the files not interesting. Unfortunately, this is a Microsoft product and it works really in this way: 1) the search job starts every time the computer is heavy loaded slowing your programs and almost blocking the HD. 2) the 'intelligent' algorithm is so intelligent that discards exactly the files that you are looking for. For this reason, a lot of people disables the Windows Search (stopping the service) and installs some alternative free program for file indexing (on internet you can find a lot of them, as example Google Desktop). I hate to have a program continuously slowing my PC for the only reason to speed the job the few times that i need to search something on my hd. When I was using Windows XP I installed a simple program (without indexing) to search for the file only when requested (slower solution, but simple), but it stopped working when I adopted Vista x64. Now I'm using a free program called 'Everything' (http://www.voidtools.com/). It uses the NTFS features to be informed when a files is changed. With this solution, it doesn't needs to continuously scan the HD to keep the index updated. The resource usage is minimal and the updating is real-time. The only drawback is that it can't search on network HD (it can only if you install another 'Everything' on the remote computer hosting the HD) and on HD with a filesystem different from NTFS. Furthermore, you can make a search based only on path/filename (you can use pattern matching).
