Hey, thanks for reading my topic. I posted this thread to get some opinions on my choice of changing operating system from Windows XP Pro SP3 to Ubuntu 9.04 (OR ANY OTHER OPERATING SYSTEM).
These are my laptop specs (HP Pavilion ze5604rs):
I'm use my laptop mostly for web surfing, music, torrenting ( ), instant messaging (Windows Live Messenger), video playback, research, word processing, ect. No need for PC gaming; I have a console. Will switching over to Ubuntu (or any other operating system) be a hassle with huge learning curves? I see that there are many Ubuntu equivalents to popular Windows applications, but will they be like... up to par? ...Will I miss Windows?Well, that's all I can think about. Thanks for reading again, and if anyone has any like tips for a new Ubuntu user (which I may become), feel free to post along with your opinion, if you post altogether.

I would first try dual booting XP and Linux before you make the complete switch. I find Ubuntu to not be too difficult but it is different from windows and can take some time getting use to esp. installing programs and drivers. Ubuntu is perfect tho for what you are looking to do, so I say give it a try.

Yes!
You won't know if you would end up liking it or not until you give it a try. The only price you pay is a bit of time. You can run it in live mode for a while if you want to play with it without affecting your HDDs at all.

UBUNTU will take huge amounts of learning. I've tried to switch over various times, but it just can't force myself to. I have a friend who keeps telling me to try it out like hes brainwashed or something, and every time he mentions it I try it out, but I just cannot get used to it..I cannot even install Adobe for watching youtube videos without running into a problem. Now its a good solution if you don't have any OS at all.

I use 9.04 myself (not now) and love it. I got everything installed without a hassle. Well, if you can decipher the confusing instructional posts.
![]() Overall, it's a great Linux distro for first time users.

Ubuntu is a great OS but like others have said will take a lot of learning. You can install it and start browsing the net, using the word processor etc in no time but when it comes to software installs, driver installs and everything else that goes with an OS it has a learning curve. I have tried many distros and I would say Ubuntu is one of the easiest, you should also check out gOS (google OS based off ubuntu) haven't used it in a while but I liked it. I would dual boot first and see how it goes, I always found myself coming back to windows just out of convenience.

Go to Add/Remove, search for "ubuntu restricted extras", check it off, and apply. Enjoy your videos! OP, you will definitely have a better experience with Linux than Windows, especially on the hardware you described.
