So I got 2008 R2 from Dreamspark was just about to activate my server when I remembered I can get R1 as well.
Since my server is a basic NAS, 90% of the time locally accessed, 10% remotely, R1 would be fine. Heck, even XP without half open TCP/IP patching would be fine. Want to avoid Linux since it has issues with the hardware in my server. What advantages would 2008 R2 give me over 7 besides the fact I can sell my Win 7 preorders?

For a NAS-server like yours, there's no advantage, tbh. I use Server 2008 R2 because of Hyper-V and all the fun server stuff that comes with the OS, like different roles and such.

I'll put R1 on my NAS simply because I can lol.
But is R2 any worse than Windows 7 after applying the tweaks to use it as a workstation OS?
