A good idea would be to just put a long zero file on your harddrive. Just do this under Linux:

dd if=/dev/zero of=~/delete

Yes, it will take up all the free space and almost fill it up with 0's. You can then delete the file afterwards and you'll get a better compression ratio on the save.
