Default Back-up windows & Ubuntu at once?

hey guys,

i just reinstalled windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04....
both are on my raid-array.
now is my question....how can i make one huge image of this all?
i want to have it all backed up in case it crashes or something.
everything is installed and set up the way i want it and i want to just be able to load the image and be ready again.
is this even possible?
i would save the image on my back up disk (750gb)
my raid 0 is 1Tb in total but only 200Gb is actually filled at the moment...does this even matter?

please help

Acronis true Image will backup the entire array, If you have enough space for the image on another drive.

will acronis see the ubuntu partition as well?
it's ext4 and i doubt many programs will see that yet
and it will only make an image of the used GB's right?
or will it image everything, including the free space on the partitions?

Make a direct image of it. Go to Linux or whatever and write in a terminal (be careful of switching around the syntax)

Code:
dd if=/dev/<yourharddrive> of=backup.img
Ie. if I were to back up my current harddrive, I'd first mount my external harddrive on /mnt/external (needs to be created first), and the first partition on my external harddrive is on /dev/sdg1. My RAID array is on /dev/md2 and I want to back it up to a file that will be created on my external harddrive.

Code:
mkdir /mnt/external
mount /dev/sdg1 /mnt/external
dd if=/dev/md2 of=/mnt/external/out.img
Ideally you'd want to compress it too, so you could instead of the current dd command use:

Code:
dd if=/dev/md2 | lzma -fcz - > /mnt/external/out.img
It takes a long time with lzma (although the compression rate is slightly better, so if size is a concern of yours, use lzma), using gzip would be a better idea:
Code:
dd if=/dev/md2 | gzip -cf - > /mnt/external/out.img

gonX thanx for the scripts, but who was talking about external hdd's?
lol, i'm gonna use my internal back up hdd for this
and maybe if it's small enough i'll use a dvd-r dl

so i think that instead of "external /out.img" i'll just have to make it "back-up/out.img"?
back-up is the name of the back up hdd (i like it simple )

Yeah I was just giving an example. You just need to have your hard drive mounted first, and set it to that location. I gave you the details to mounting a drive up there too

sweet thanx
i'd wanna +rep you, but you know the problem with that lol
i assume that the image will only contain the used GB's of the partitions?
and that the MBR and all is also backed up?

It makes an exact 1:1 copy of your harddrive, which will result in some additional wasted space. It's certainly not the most ideal, but it's the only way to make sure that it's working.

If you zero out your drive between formats, then it shouldn't be an issue.
