Default Windows 7 upgrade question.

Can you use a retail version of Windows 7 Upgrade to upgrade an OEM version of Windows XP Media Center 2005?

I believe you can use the upgrade from either XP or Vista, all versions. With yours, of course you'll have to do a clean install.

Please chime in if I'm wrong, but I'm 80% sure.

Microsoft claims that it's not possible to do the Upgrade-over-the-previous-version style of install when upgrading from XP to 7. The format > clean install path must be used instead. Thankfully, the Upgrade disc is the full version of Windows 7, but it will ask for the previous version's Product Key to verify that it's a legitimate upgrade.

So, as long as that Product Key has been activated on the system you're going to install Windows 7 on, then you will be fine.

Nzon3,

Yes you can use a retail upgrade version of Windows 7 to upgrade an OEM version of Windows XP Media Center 2005 however you will need the Windows 7 Professional upgrade to do so. Also, please note that when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 you will not have an "in place upgrade" option. You will however have the option to select "custom" install when prompted. The Windows 7 install process will then copy all of your data in "My Documents" over to a Windows.old folder within Windows 7 itself. All applications and documents stored in other locations will have to be reinstalled / transferred manually.

For additional assistance with the migration of Windows XP to Windows 7, please go here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/w.../ee150430.aspx

Yeah, but what about upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 this way?
  1. Move all files you want to keep to a safe location.
  2. Boot from Windows 7 DVD.
  3. Choose the custom installation.
  4. Have it format the one and only partition, and then install.
I mean, I have a valid XP Product Key that is currently activated on this system. My copy of Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade will be arriving on Monday. Windows 7 build 7100 is currently installed on the G.SKILL Falcon while XP is on the VelociRaptor, but I want to boot from the Windows 7 DVD with the Falcon as the ONLY drive in my system, then format it, then install the new copy of Windows 7 on it.

Will it work?

Oh, and that guide on Technet is for businesses who have made the decision to migrate all of their workstations over from XP to 7. We are home users, not business owners.
