Can you use a retail version of Windows 7 Upgrade to upgrade an OEM version of Windows XP Media Center 2005?

I believe you can use the upgrade from either XP or Vista, all versions. With yours, of course you'll have to do a clean install.

Microsoft claims that it's not possible to do the Upgrade-over-the-previous-version style of install when upgrading from XP to 7. The format > clean install path must be used instead. Thankfully, the Upgrade disc is the full version of Windows 7, but it will ask for the previous version's Product Key to verify that it's a legitimate upgrade.
So, as long as that Product Key has been activated on the system you're going to install Windows 7 on, then you will be fine.

Nzon3,
Yes you can use a retail upgrade version of Windows 7 to upgrade an OEM version of Windows XP Media Center 2005 however you will need the Windows 7 Professional upgrade to do so. Also, please note that when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 you will not have an "in place upgrade" option. You will however have the option to select "custom" install when prompted. The Windows 7 install process will then copy all of your data in "My Documents" over to a Windows.old folder within Windows 7 itself. All applications and documents stored in other locations will have to be reinstalled / transferred manually. For additional assistance with the migration of Windows XP to Windows 7, please go here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/w.../ee150430.aspx Jessica Microsoft Windows Client Team |

Yeah, but what about upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 this way?
Will it work? Oh, and that guide on Technet is for businesses who have made the decision to migrate all of their workstations over from XP to 7. We are home users, not business owners.
