Default Defrag question

I'm defragging my HD, using the windows defragmenter, before I install Windows 7 and it's taking a long time. I know it does take a lot of time, but it has been going for over 8 hours.

I'm thinking I probably should of cleaned up a little before hand like clearing browser cookies and history as well as using the free up disk space utility.

My question is should I stop the process, do the clean up, and then use another program like smartdefrag(or the default Windows defrag program)? I was reading that smartdefrag is quicker but it's not good to run two different defrag programs.

Or just let it run its course?

It should never take that long unless you have large files or small files that are extremely fragmented that is way to long delete useless things clear everything out that you dont need/want. Defraging for so long I wouldnt reccomend unless your HDD is adequetly cooled a long time ago I use to defrag a long time and the HDD can get so hot the soder/lead starts melting and chips start falling off

This is the first time I've defragged and I've had this system about 2 months. Have a 300gb HD and about half is used mostly games.

just get smart defrag and set it to run at startup.... uses no system resources and youll never have to defrag again...

Any problems from stopping the Windows defrag process and then running another defrag program?

Thought I read it's not good to run two different defrag programs.

No, throw away the one that comes with Windows and never look back.

Not at the same time, yes. There's no harm in changing to a different one though. Once you try a third party program you'll never go back to the one that comes with Windows. I recommend Auslogics Disk Defrag, it's what I use and it's very fast: link. You can schedule when you want it to defrag, have it automatically do it when your system is idle, or do it manually (the default).
