If I purchase that student version of Windows 7 for $29.99 will I be able to do a fresh install or do I need to upgrade from XP/Vista?

xp has problems with SATA drives. Thats what your problem is. Ive had this same problem numerous times with SATA drives. Easiest thing to do is go into your BIOS and change the HDD type from SATA to either ATA or IDE. Thats what i had to do for my wifes laptop and it worked like a charm.

I disabled everything I can find that says SATA in the BIOS and it made the drive error go away but it still restarts in the middle of the setup.

I'm formatting my SATA drive at the moment. I have no way of formatting the IDE drive that is causing the problem.

How can I go about formatting it? I cannot hook it up to another PC because I don't have another motherboard that supports IDE and for some reason the ISO or EXE version of DBAN Nuke and Boot will not boot.
