If you run it with the windows classic theme, with all the bells and whistles disabled...it might work.

The Aero theme takes about 600 MB. If you don't use it, you can go with 1 GB of ram without problems. But if you start applications other the Notepad, you will need more ram, exactly like Vista.

There is a big difference between Windows 7 simply running and a Windows 7 useful. I installed it on an old 3GHz P4 notebook with 1GB of ram without problems, but when I tried to run on it Microsoft Office, it was unusable.
Sir, your so full of BS I can smell it! Windows 7 is WAY better than vista! It runs better and no where nearly as bloated or resource hungry as vista. I have yet to use my 4GB of RAM with Win7!!!!

Windows 7 for 512 is dooable but don't expect Aero to run on it unless you have a dedicated graphics solution. I've installed Win7 on lots of computers and honestly, the best configs to work smoothly are from 768mb of ram and beyond.

Anyway as for my proper answer...Its possible yes..Practical...no.

Even though Windows 7 is much better at allocating RAM usage its still going to suffer running on only 256MB.

I think the performance you will get will be sub sub par.

seriously though, I know what it's like to be on a budget. BUT... he can still get some more RAM so that he can do it, for VERY cheap. Just mow a few yards, or otherwise get the funds.

The cost of a Windows 7 is worth more than his machine.

Even the most stripped down version of Win7 needs around 200mb of ram at idle, the standard install uses around 400mb at idle. Your friend's comp won't be able to run Win7. If he really wants to run it, tell him to get at least 512mb of ram.
