Default Is Windows 7 worth it over XP?

Sup OCN, 2nd retarded thread today,

I'm thinking of getting my dad a new $500 workstation computer instead of trying to revive his age-old Dell Dimension 4400, and he says he has a copy of Windows XP Home 32-bit.

My question is, is it worth getting Windows 7 64-bit with that rig over XP 32-bit? It's for work only, and he needs the OS to be compatible with Quick Books. With the $100 or so I save from not getting Win7, I could get much better parts, but the 4GB of RAM won't be totally utilized....

so should I stick with XP 32-bit and get better parts, but not have 4GB of RAM used, or go Windows 7, and stick with the parts I have in the cart?

Hmm. Is he really, really used to Windows XP? I mean, how easily would he be able to handle the differences between XP and 7?

Personally, I think it's very worth it. But I have a dad (60 years old) who would hate Windows 7 because he's so used to XP. He doesn't have the patience to get used to the differences of Windows 7 even though it's a much better and much more secure operating system.

So, it depends on how well your dad can handle change like this. But, I imagine that he might not even care if Windows 7 is better. If he's anything like my dad, then he will say "I don't care. I just want it to work."

My dad works with XP every day, but he likes the feel of Windows 7, even if he can't navigate around it.

In fact, I'm wondering if I should've even switched to Win7 at all; my computer is getting worse framerates in CS:S and Halo 1 - but at least I can play H2V >.>

I'll stick with XP for now. He says he would like Windows 7, but I don't think he's going to be familiar with it.

He's also paranoid of Microsoft phasing out XP support.

EDIT: since I have an extra $100 left in my cart, should I get a video card, better CPU, or more HDD space for him?

Well, he's right to be paranoid about MS phasing out XP support because they have already started and it will be completely unsupported in a couple of years.

It sounds like your dad is familiar with Windows 7 already and willing to learn the new and moved features. Since that's the case, I'd say might as well upgrade him now.

The build you have selected is great for basic use. Unless your dad will be playing games, everything in there will be perfect and he'll absolutely love it.

I just upgraded my dad from XP to 7 on his Dell Vostro, and he seems to be enjoying it thus far. Windows 7 runs well, despite him only having a 1 GB of RAM and an older Core2 Duo. My dad's an old DOS Wizard, and hasn't bothered learning any of the Windows operating systems since 3.1, so I was a little worried that Windows 7 would be too big of a jump for him, but he hasn't had any problems yet. I think you should do it

Hmm. Then it sounds like the decision is totally up to him. I mean, my dad wouldn't know how to make that decision. He'd just say "well, it doesn't matter to me, just as long as the computer works properly." But he'd be saying that not knowing how different Windows 7 is. So at that point, I would know to avoid Windows 7.

But with your dad, it sounds like he would prefer to have Windows 7, and it also sounds like he wouldn't mind getting used to it. So, it might be totally his call.

But still, for his needs, XP is almost more than enough.
