I think you have to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium only.

put disc in computer.
turn of computer. turn on computer. hit key to boot from cd. go through the set-up till you see a upgrade option, there should be another option called "advanced" or is it "custom", but if you wanna upgrade hit the upgrade one. i went from Vista Ultimate to Win7 Ultimate so yea.. ok i looked it up losttsol is right. for Win7 pro you need vista business, or do a full clean install :/ Clean upgrade is when you got to reformat your drive (deletes all your files) and makes a new windows installation.

There's not really a vice versa but give it a try. I know you can upgrade from Ultimate to Ultimate, HP to HP, and Business to Pro.

Each edition upgrade options only applied to their edition equivalents that is 32-bit to 32-bit & 64-bit to 64-bit with that out of the way however, Ultimate can do an in-place upgrade to all editions except for Windows Vista Starter, Windows 7 Professional only has an in-place update for Windows Vista Business & all other editions will require a clean install (Custom install, wiping/overwriting in otherwords) Windows 7 Home Premium can offer upgrade to both Windows Vista Home Basic & Home Premium, rest need clean installs.

Vista Home Basic/Premium upgrades to Win7 Home Premium or Win7 Ultimate Vista Business upgrades to Win7 Profession or Win7 Ultimate Vista Ultimate upgrades to Win7 Ultimate x86 can only upgrade to x86 x64 can only upgrade to x64 I hope that helps. What this means to you? You cannot upgrade from Vista Home Premium x64 to Windows 7 Profession x64. You can only upgrade to either Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Ultimate. If you want to install Windows 7 Professional x64, you'll have to do a clean installation in other words format/install.
