Hi all.
__________________I'm in rather desperate need of an explanation for the behaviour of Windows 7 and my second hard drive. It keeps setting the entire disk to write protected. The first time it happened I was able to go in via diskpart and clear the read only status, however since then diskpart has reported the drive as non-read only (i.e. not write protected) but still Windows 7 insists the drive is write protected. Last night I used disk manager to remove the drive from the system (and losing all data in the process) which, when I re-added the drive, allowed me to write to the volume. I thought all was sorted, although I was a bit sad about losing my data! So, this morning, I fired up the PC. Tested to see if the drive was read only, and it wasn't. Happy days! Unfortunately, some time between 11am and 12 midday, the drive switched back to read only. Diskpart claims the volume is not write protected. I've tried changing the properties of the subfolders/folders, but it's still write protected. Can anyone help? It's driving me nuts. I've mucked about with ownership (got a hack off'f the internet that allows me to assume ownership of folders) but the issue seems deeper than that; Windows 7 seems to want to lock me out of my own danged drive. Thanks, and +rep for anyone who can suggest the permanent fix that I know -must- be out there somewhere.

Hmm, interesting.
__________________diskpart lists the volume attributes as being readonly "off", but clearing the read only attribute fixes it temporarily. Anyone know why Windows 7 keeps setting my media drive to read-only? I've got a few pictures in there that W7 is using as background; that's the only thing on there which is used by any application at all. EDIT: Linky http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-...protected.html Having to manually clear this every time is a PITA. suggestions?

Shameless bump.
__________________I'm the only person I know of on the internets who's having this problem (google confirms it's just me) but if anyone's got any ideas I'd be grateful. Once againn W7 has set my media drive to write protected. Once again I've removed the flag using diskpart. Thanks,

I've had the same issues.
Writes not allowed ![]() Was totally barred from Program Files directory writing, so I couldn't update any of my programs. I've personally never found a solution for it other than to reformat and reinstall everything fresh. It's happened twice so far, both on the RC/Beta of Win7.

Hmm.
__________________C: drive is fine, but the media drive is the one that keeps setting itself to read only. Pretty frustrating. Interestingly I did format the drive once but it still set it to read only the next morning. It's weird; it's not an ownership or privileges issue, it seems the media is set to read only across the entire volume.

That IS strange O.o
Hmm... I can't honestly think of anything that'd do that. I mean, the drive in my mind would have to be extremely clustereffed. But who knows.

I've checked for disk errors; SMART status is fine and the drive itself performs both silently and effectively. I don't think there's anyhthing wrong with the drive at all.

I'm beyond the odd tear of rage at this point, just quietly hopeful one of our resident storage/W7 experts might be able to suggest something.
