knoppix is probably the linux distro youre talking about ryknow... or someone probably took the code and made their own distro

the 1337357 linux distro has to be microsoft linux... http://www.mslinux.org ... hahaha

seriously tho... linux is just as good as windows and windows is just as good as linux... both have advantages and both have downfalls... it all depends on the user... both are ultra customizable, both have great programs available... lots to say about them

I dont see how anyone can say linux is harder than using windows... to be honest I think a lot of naysayers havent fully user or experienced a decent linux distro

its hard to classify linux distros as beginner or advanced... theyre complete departures from windows and great for that and many other reasons... heres a few you should check out

redhat - http://www.redhat.com
suse - http://www.suse.com
mandrake - http://www.mandrakelinux.com
debian - http://www.debian.org
gentoo - http://www.gentoo.org (admittedly, dont try unless youre experienced with linux)
knoppix (for fun) - http://www.knoppix.net
slackware - http://www.slackware.com
freebsd - http://www.freebsd.org (actually bsd unix not linux)

lots more, you can visit http://www.linuxiso.org to grab them as well

not to mention all the other completely different OSes you can find and play with...

You can load to another drive.
First switch the "Boot" drive in the BIOS and load to play with it (ie. to HD 1 instead of 0).
Or you can down load Knoppix for free and run it out of a CD-ROM.

NICE post THENUT!!!

greater latitude of customization.

I do actually like some Windows versions- Win2K is excellent- but overall I feel that linux is just a better overall choice for me. If I had to pay for Microsoft licenses for all of the computers I have running now (7) I would be considerably poorer!

The massive amount of software available for Linux is probably graeter than the amount for windows....AND lower cost many times! But installation can be difficult in many cases, and many programs do not work quite the way Windows users expect.

Linux is still not ready for Joe Average Computer User, in my arrogant opinion, but it does get closer all the time.
If you haven't checked it out lately, you might want to.

depends on your distro too. personally, i would recommend something like red hat or knoppix , lindows or lycoris to even people who cant use windows, these are made to be idiot proof... then again, you give a noob slackware and he wont know what to do with it.. it is true that there are more programs for linux for two reasons: 1: linux is used everywhere in the world(especially europe), 2: there are emulators that let you run all the windows programs on linux anyway, and ive proven you can play them just as fast if you configure it properly, you can run a windows program natively in linux.
i have tested the following games and have had no problems atall:

half-life
unreal tournement 2003
diablo 1 and 2
bejeweled deluxe
mist
doom 3
halo
and ive also run win xp, win2k and win 2k3 from linux too

linux can chew up microsoft and spit it out, bury it and piss on its grave

I voted "huh", because you didn't stipulate what the OS's primary fuction would be. For a gaming platform, Windows. For everything else, Linux.

....pretty much what's already been said.
