I have thought about linux as well but I wouldn't know a thing about it, and I still need windows on that computer as a backup in case my main rig dies, at least until I get the lanbox running.

Well, that's the thing. If you run Linux in VMware, you are still in Windows. It's basically running Linux inside of Windows. And apparently, the Linux SMP client is good enough that there's even a performance gain while doing this.

Figure out how and next week when I get the lanbox together I will experiment on it on my backup folder.(the lanbox with the 5000BE will be folding for Team_The_Replacements

Yea, Thats what I run is VMWare+Ubuntu and I am now folding away at 9min2sec/% ,

Gotta love that decrease in time compared to just Win SMP.

Hey Lemans, you will want to run VMWare Server 1.05 and be sure to disable driver signing otherwise it won't work with Vista x64.

I'm at work right now but get with me sometime tonight or tomm evening and I can try and help you run through and get it all setup, plus Phalen has a thread on it in the folding section, just look for VMWare 1.04+Ubuntu Guide.

By the way, I just ordered a Vista 64-bit upgrade DVD. I've heard a 64-bit OS can also improve folding speeds too.

Yea, it seems some help more than other, but when you run VMWare+Ubuntu on your virtual machine Ubuntu that I run is 64-bit so doesn't matter what version windows you are running.(of course Ubuntu is Linux, I'm using OCNix ftw!!! )

One of the great guides on ocn, PhalenJKell did pretty good on this one, and in some later posts you will see the addition of 1.05 and some use 2.0. here the link is. everything you need is in this thread. http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...ntu-guide.html

Actually, I tried running 64-bit Ubuntu in VMware in my 32-bit Vista and it wouldn't work. It may be because the E2180 doesn't have "Virtualization Technology Support".

Exact reason right there, The E2*** and E4*** do not support virtualization therefore cannot run VMWare.

I can run VMware. It just won't have any hardware acceleration and I can't run a 64-bit virtual machine on a 32-bit host OS.

No, read the VMWare site and requirements, you cannot actually run VMWare, you can install it but under no way can you utilize it without Virtualization.

Here is a link to check compatibility http://www.vmware.com/download/ws/drivers_tools.html just go a little down the page and it will have a link to check.
