You can only use two cores of that CPU (assuming that the other members of your team all have two cores also). You CANNOT fold on four cores for the team folding competition, whether it's SMP or not. For team folding, your E6300 is probably better (since I don't expect the X3210 to clock any higher than the 3.5GHz of your current CPU)

Running one instance of Linux only uses 2 cores. To fold 100% on a quad with Linux you have to run two instances. With WinSMP you have to set affinity to two cores, it does work. I went from ~7min per frame to ~12min per frame after setting affinity. That's the same time I had with my E6600. It will be very easy to tell if someone is using all 4 cores by the points (~2000ppd vs, ~3500ppd).

That's true for Linux through VMWare. Natively Linux runs on all four cores by default, though that can easily be controlled through the taskset command. Pretty much quads on any OS can be used in the team competition with the proper care to stay under the core limits.

And the margin was almost as close as possible because that is less than one work unit. Should be a great competition this month as well.

I didn't realize native Linux used all 4 cores. I wonder what the difference is for a quad running native Linux vs WinSMP in PPD?

I've not personally use WinSMP, but from what I understand, native Linux SMP is noticeably faster.
