Its not that im not new to this, ive built a few systems before but ive always used the White TIM or the pads on the CPU Coolers before ive never used the metal based ones thats why i was just a bit unsure.

I only use that stuff when I have to (ex.when I run out of good TIM)

The white stuff isn't totally bad though. It doesn't separate and it spreads well

What is the surface of the IHS? Is it an aluminum or a chrome plating (or something else) before you get down to the copper?

EDIT--after looking into it more, the surface of the IHS is a tin layer, so all should be fine.

Well, I just finished reading a couple reviews of Liquid Pro. Bottom line? Statistically it's a draw. AS5 is just as effective as Liquid Pro not to mention easier to apply and there are no issues with HS material types. Shin Etsu was considered slightly better than AS5 but again there are many variables that come into play when assessing the thermal effectiveness of these TIM's, the biggest being effective application and HS installation. Without a fixture or machine performing the application and installation it is next to impossible to ensure consistent testing parameters IMHO.

That said, personally I would go with the Shin Etsu or AS5.

The surface of the IHS is nickel, with copper underneath (if you lap it).

I have tried out 4-5 TIM's and I say my fave would be MX-2, although everyone has their own fave. the ICD7 is a bit thick but if you spread it first or use a really tight mount then you will be fine, its what Im using now. However I love MX-2 it is a nice consistency spreads out even every time and has great temps! I believe OCZ freeze is about the same as MX-2. AS5 is bottom of the heap now days and it also takes 200 hours of cure time. I am kinda surprised to see anyone recommending it these days.
