Default What method to YOU use to apply TIM?

Just a general curiosity question. So what method do YOU use to apply TIM to your CPU/cooler mating surfaces? This even applies to the WC and phase change coolers. You may even include your GPU, NB, SB, GPU VRM, etc. Whatever has a cooler on it in your computer.

For me, it depends. With a HDT the two/three line method (depends on the number of heatpipes), but for a standard heatsink (flat) I spread it on the CPU. I tend to leave the NB, SB, and GPU related stuff alone at this time.

I've never spread the TIM myself - always just placed a small pea-sized amount in the center and let it spread out itself when the heat sink is mounted.

Never had any problems.

Might be good to spread it on RAM modules/MOSFETs though if you don't want to get TIM on the PCB as some might oooze out the sides (especially with Arctic Silver 5 - it's slightly conductive)

I use the 2 line HDT method. For non-HDT coolers I use the dot in the middle of the cpu the put the heatsink on.

Small drop of TIM on a chip, press heatsink on, take heatsink off, spread TIM with plastic bag, put heatsink on move it around a tiny bit to help it get into the crevices, lock it down.

For my laptop(s) I placed a tiny amount in the centre of the CPU and folded a bit of paper so it becomes less flexible and more rugged. I ran the paper along the TIM until there was a thin layer above the CPU which was smooth. I used AS5.

I normally do the whole pea size thing, but now I have found myself doing the pea size in the middle but taking an old credit card or my unused library card and spreading a thin layer over the CPU.

I put a fair sized drop of paste in the center, then clamp.

Here is a fairly good article on why other methods are sub-optimumal:
