Default Lapping my 920 D0, please help.

Hi there fellow overclockers

It seems very interesting to lap my CPU, I want to achive better temps and get it 100% falt.

This week I will get my V8 Stinger High Polish Brass from Fred, so I want to lap my cpu.

But I've never done it, just seen a few pictures of lapped cpu's. that's all.

How thick is the copper base of the CPU before you run into the cpu it's self?

Is there any great guide for lapping CPU's?

I was sendings some PM's with Fred yesterday, and he said I should lap my CPU to achive best tempratures with my rig.

A lapped 920 D0, V8 Stinger, TFC Monsta radiator, D5 Vario and a EK 250 multires can't go wrong?

I used an old door from a toaster oven but now I have a nice piece of granite tile from a tile store. get a small piece of foam rubber to hold the pin side of the CPU with so you are not constantly touching the contacts. Then use circular and figure 8 motion to sand off the nickel. Start with the 500 till you get it all off down to bare copper then switch to the 1000 to finish it off. Just use steady even pressure and be careful not to rock it. It does not need to be like a mirror either but the 1000 paper will make it shine the more you do it. after I am done I clean it up with alcohol then dry it with a hair dryer. you don't need to flood the paper just a little once in a while to keep it wet.

I really don't want to destroy my 920 D0 cause it's a very good batch that clocks high on low voltage, so I need a bulletproof plan

Yeeeeeees, this one wants to get lapped!

I say you should bring that cpu to a professional person if you want to lap it that badly.. Dont do this by yourself.
If that's your first, maybe you'll do it just a bit wrong, and thats it, the cpu is "damaged".
(if the ihs after lapping differs only just 1 degree from horizontal, it's absolutely no good. flat can be achieved quickly and easily, but that doesnt guarantee it'll be also horizontal.)

I guess, but where do I find people that can lap CPU's in Norway, chance is minor

At least I want to bring the Copper Surface into daylight:]

Right..

I have lapped numerous cpus and types [775, AM2 etc] and I always, always check my flatness with a razor blade first. Most tend to be concave, where the sides are higher than the center. CPU Heatsinks tend to be the opposite.

What I do:

If it is really concave, I start with 240 Grit.
If not, I start with 400 grit.

All you simply do then is secure your paper down on a good flat surface [Glass is ideal]
and keep working your way up through the numerous different grits. Once all the the copper is exposed and the the IHS is flat.

Then continue onto higher grits for polishing.

Remember, flatness is much more important than bling anyday...

So you attach the paper onto a pice of glass?

Glass is absolutely flat so if you do lapping on the surface of a mirror, you won't F up your cpu in the first minutes of the operation.
I don't think you got what i tried to say. If you do it only a bit wrong, the ihs of the cpu will be flat, yes, but maybe it'll be skew a bit. Just 1 or 2 degrees, and that will be it, its worse than the original factory state, because the cooler wont sit on it properly. Or you chop off the edges of the cpu and it becomes concave.
You should be extra careful with lapping, and take your time.

When i did mine, at the first attempt, i made the ihs skew . Hours later, it was still skew but now on the other side. About a day of lapping later, the surface is perfect, the cooler is sitting nice on it, i can push it harder (3440MHz stable). But it was a struggle to get it done properly.

It would be pitfull to screw up the 920 D0 tbh, but if I could manage to do a 100% perfect lap, it would be awsome.

Mabye I could try to get in contact with some professionale and ask him to do it

A Friend of mine got pretty many old cpu's, he was willing to give me one so I could try it out and do some lapping.
