Default Is it a good idea to apply my own thermal paste to my GPU?

I have noticed that my graphics card (EVGA 9800GTX+) has been running a little warmer lately. It has been running in the same conditions the whole time. I did clean the heatsink and fan, and was wondering if it would be a good idea to remove the heatsink and apply some arctic silver 5 and reapply the heatsink. If it's ok to do this, do I just apply it to the GPU, or do I apply it to the memory chips also?

Just apply it to the GPU, but be extremely careful with AS5 because its highly conductive. You might want to try OCZ Freeze or IC7 instead just to be safe. I haven't had a problem with AS5 yet but you just have to be extremely careful.

Also just leave the ramchips as they are (don't put any on there).

I actually did this this morning. use it on the RAM and the GPU, your temps should go down.

The memory chips should have thermal pads on them, because they are not always 100% even. So don't change that (unless you have some other thermal pads you want to use, then by all means go for it).

But yes feel free to replace the TIM on the GPU, it's probably a good idea, especially if your card is already a few months old.

(sorry for double post) putting it on the RAM allows for more stable overclocks if you wish to go that route.. but who wouldn't? THIS IS OCN!

Yes but he would need gobs of it because there would be a huge gap between the ram and the heatsink...thermal pads should do perfectly fine unless he gets an aftermarket cooler and ramsinks.

Yes, that is true. For me personally there was no gap so I was lucky

YES... i didnt want to do it at first to my SLI gtx 260s... BUT i finally decided to do it and it idles 2c-3c cooler and in furmark my temps get up to 68c (after 5 minutes... but they stay there).

EDIT: I just applied thermal paste, i didnt change the thermal pads since i think those are fine as is.
