Just for the record me and a friend are going to be doing this for fun and already know its expensive and may or may not be as efficient as other cooling techniques. =]
We just had a few questions in terms of how this may work and was hopping you guys can shed some knowledge =] We wanted to use a radiator free version so have a pool of mineral oil with the components inside the oil but would it be okay to do this with out a pump and a raid to cool the oil itself? or would the oil exposed to the air dissipate air fast enough? (we're going to be using a old q6600 i have. =] ) also what components should be submerged? We wanted to do a wet bay and a dry bay (dry with hdd and cd drivie). Hmm.. and i guess is there anything else we should be aware of in this build? just trying to get the most info we can.. Thanks for the help! =]

assuming a 5 gallon fish tank, after i think its 8 hours of idling, a pentium 3 starts getting the oil hot
it all depends on how long it will be running, and room temp you will need SOMETHING making oil move over the cpu heatsink, even if just a fan

but by the sounds of it prob the mineral oil wouldnt cool fast enough to keep up with how fast the cpu would heat it?

Everything except the PSU, Optical, HDD, keyboard, mouse, monitor, and other peripherals can be submerged. I'm not too sure about fans though. you just put the motherboard with the processor and RAM installed into the tank and submerge it in oil. Unfortunately, oil can't dissipate heat faster than your CPU can supply it so if it's quick test, you'll be fine. If you're wanting to do this over a certain period of time, be mindful of your temps and set an alarm. It might help to get the oil cold before hand if it's chilly there in CA. Just leave it outside so it gets the ambient temp and then try it. It will give you a little bit longer of a time period.
I think you can do it for up to 4 hours without the oil getting too hot.

Well the mineral oil just keeps getting hotter slowly. The contact with an absorber that takes an infinite amount of heat without changing temperature ( aka the environment ) is the walls of your aquarium and the air 9 if you leave the top open. Something to make bubbles would allow a lot more heat to be dissipated into the environment.

hmmm .. so for short periods of time it would be fine but for day to day use (pc gaming and such) it would be less then ideal? hmm.. so a radiator and pump would me most ideal i think the budget we have dedicated to cooling alone is $100? .. i think the goal is for a gaming pc with no heavy overclock. oil takes long to heat up -> oil takes long to cool down
cooling with oil = no

ahh.. wait so oil is not a great medium to use for cooling? what about.. hmm no conductive fluid used for liquid cooling? could that be used?
