check if you modem has extra initialization commands (usually only for hardware modems like external 56k) and play with them, maybe change it's mode to K56flex or set it to max out at 48000bps or 52000bps, sometimes lowering a connection speed can increase bandwidth and lower pings (by lower packet loss) also if you have XP pro disable the QoS packet scheduler. like is illustrated in this guide here

http://support.earthlink.net/mu/1/ps.../6800.psc.html

once i disabled this Qos thing, my bandwidth went form 4.5k/s to over 6k/sec on my 56k so it definately make a difference

naw man....
not that i've heard of yet...but i always kept a 56k modem in all my rigs...
never know when the lights will go out
you can get some nice programs though like magictweak or xpsmoker...that will optimize the registry settings to keep your maximum download speeds...
heck i was downloading updates on my 64 rig on dial up and it was runnin' at like 9 kbs...

i wouldnt recomend any "automatic" registry tweakers..

as i have found that though they do increase the connection speed..
they dont do it as well as optimizing it yourself
