Default L.E.D.S How to??

Ok, I purchased a bunch of different l.e.d.s, my goal is to hopefully put a few l.e.d.s in my dvd drive, the problem is I really don't know were to draw power from to power the l.e.d.s.. and I don't know anything about powering leds. Everything I have tried results in burned out l.e.d.s. Do I need to run a resistor or something?.. I am very confused. I really want to learn how to make the l.e.d.s work, as I have a lot of ideas about places to put them. If someone could post a good walthrew or some advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you need to almost always use a resistor. They are current sensitive devices and will draw current if you let them. If I remember right anyway. If i'm wrong someone correct me!!

I stand corrected and I do it to myself!!! They are voltage sensitive. You always need a resistor though!! Check this out! Hope it helps.

LEDs are just diodes that emit light that we can see. So they do consume some power (usually 0.7v to 0.3v) but without a resistor of a sort you are basiclly creating a short in a circuit. A resistor is a MUST.

I registered for this frum just to correct this missconception about LEDs. LEDs use any where from 2-5 volts (typically) depending on the brightness. You cannot just slap a resistor in there and hope for your LED not to burn up. You have to use a formula (yes it requires simple math skills). When you buy your LEDs you need to know at least 2 things about them their opperating volatage and power consumption. (power consumption is usually 30 mA). For those of you that want to do it the easy way there is n online calculator: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homep...Bowden/led.htm

hopefully this will help.

Yup Yup, if current has no resistor, it will flow happily and plentiful causing a burn up of the device. Gotta limit the current going into it since it only needs a certain amount.

This is some good reading for anyone that wants to know the basics of electricity and leds. I learned off this guide myself close to 8 years ago..
