So it's spring break for me and I got really bored, so I decided to pull out my hardware and start lapping away. I'm not really good with a camera, but I do have before and after shots. This was my first time to lap and I was really nervous, who wouldn't be when processors cost as much as they do. But by being careful and methodical, I think I did pretty well.

First the before pictures:

After reading some instructions on this site and googling some others, I made sure to use a piece of glass under the sandpaper. A trip to the auto zone scored me some 400-660(they were out of 800)-1000-1500-2000 grit sand papers. Starting on the low and making my way up, I sanded down both heat plates. The project took me a little more than an hour to get everything down, and this is the result:

Not polished, but reflects pretty well.

Installed it back in my machine, put on some AS5, and right off the bat idles were down about 2 degrees Celsius. Not too bad for being bored.

looks nice mate...but a little polish would give a better finish. I lapped my TR Ultra 120 Extreme and came out nice. Gonna lap my 6600 soon too.

Does polish add material to the lapped surface or does it act like an abrasive and take away more material?

dont put polish cream on the unit, it will screw up the lapping. some polishing products have actually been known to create little pockets(or dimples if you will) in the metal. the best way to get the polished look is just to sand with finer sand paper. it's not really advised to use polishing compound on it.

Yes he is correct it will scratch the finish!

Some polishes actually add a thin coating to the metal, which obviously you wouldn't want for maximum heat transfer. Any kind of polish would detract from the effectiveness of the lap.
