I have no where to put my Xbox games, so it's time to build a small shelf. I'm sort of in the mood to build something anyway. I need help on choosing what kind of wood to use (Needs to be cheap) and how exactly to fit it on the wall and have it be sturdy. What are those 90 degree metal attachments that screw on to the bottom of a shelf and then onto the wall called? I supposed I could buy those at Home Depot. Could Home Depot also supply me with a big square piece of wood?
Here is a picture of my desk setup so you know what the color of my desk is and how big I want the thing. I want the shelf to go about 5 inches above where the xbox is on the left side, and the shelf itself should be about 10 inches long. I don't have that many games. ![]() ![]()

Hiya, Retro.
![]() Sweet! Building stuff! Awesome! Any piece of wood can be made to look like a million-bucks with some sanding and some clear coat. There are also self-leveling epoxy liquids that will hermetically seal the wood and give it a high-sheen. Mounting: It is advisable to mount any load-bearing pieces to studs. Studs are normally spaced on 16 inch centers, and can be located by measuring or using a stud-finder. If you are in a single-floor domicile it is possible to have spacings up to 24" but that is generally not the case. If you are able to mount to studs, then wood-screws would suffice. Depending upon the total mass that the shelf will be rated for, you may be able to get away with 1/4" screws, but I would go at least 1/2" If you can not mount to studs, and are mounting to drywall then you ought to use Mollys.. If you forgo the use of these, then the longevity and strength of the mounting will be greatly compromised. If you have access to a router, you could give the edges of the shelf a nice profile? Good luck. ![]()

Sounds like the studs in the wall are about 12 inches apart, so that shouldn't be a huge problem. Normal screws should be ok.
As far as weight goes, the shelf is going to be bearing very minimal weight. At most 5 games and a digital clock.

I don't think this would look quite as good as a real wood shelf, but for an awesome DIY look, check out this guide:http://www.wikihow.com/Create-Invisible-Shelves
__________________I suppose you could use some old Xbox game cases for the shelf instead of a book; maybe have multiple shelves that all have a single stack of games on them? IDK, its an idea... ![]()
