Default Sandpaper

I'm trying to find some 2000 grit sandpaper to finish my lapping job, but I'm having no luck. I've checked Lowe's, Home Depot, and the local Hardware store but all I can find is 600. And ideas?

You can't find it at a Hardware store. You need to go to an auto parts store, they have the fine stuff. If you don't find any still, shop around online. I got a lapping kit from SVS, and my only complaint was that the sheets they included were too small. They were about like wallet size pictures. But the kit came with up to 2500 grit, and it did a damn fine job on my TRUE and Q6600. Hope that helps!

Completely disagree w/ buying from an online store... $12+shipping for a kit usable for 4 times?

First, you don't need all those grits for a good lapping job.... you really only need 200, 400, 600, and 1500 grits... anything past 600 is really just for shine and gives no extra cooling performance (which is why I don't suggest 1000 or 2000 - I added 1500 only because people seem obsessed with their performance gains being visible)

the first 3 (200, 400, 600) can be had @ hardware stores or found at home... 1500 can be found at any autobody shop... total won't run you more than $15 - much less if you can find 200, 400 and/or 600 at home... you should also end up with enough material for AT LEAST 10-15 jobs

I might eventually lap my TRUE, but not for mirror finish, just functionality - it has a slight crown perpendicular to the heat pipe path. For now, since Im not OC'd, its fine (idle 28c - load 34c) but if I decide to oc later I will definitely lap it.
